Call of Duty 4 Singleplayer

Over Christmas I've been finishing the singleplayer campaign of Call of Duty 4 Modern Warfare. Finishing it in about 3 days of Christmas says two things; first it is a really good game and secondly it is rather short.

I'm not a big player of the other CoD incarnations but I guess the formula is about the same. You play a character that has to go through a number of missions, each mission having several objectives you have to clear in quite a linear fashion. The whole game runs pretty much on rails, focusing on the combat and some tactical choises for the player (picking up weapons, limited choice of selecting what way to go). This works really well as you have some senior characters escorting you making it feel realistic.

The game focuses on first person combat from two perspectives the first is an SAS strike force and the other is a more regular USMC recon force. Both perspecitves are good an provide change in scenery and weaponary.

The really good storyline fuses the two perspectives in a good way and the voice acting and animations are really well made. I simply needed to know what would happen next (and mind you I have not finished HL2 ep2)!

Some of the levels really stand out with atmosphere and ambience and are quite astonishing. Since it's a beautiful game it puts a strain on the computer, I had some gfx glithes but did not really mind them (also I played unpathed and on a laptop). Sound and music is outstanding.

Finishing the game unlocked an arcade mode and ingame cheats. Then you also have multiplayer to try out!

For the last few years console gaming has been all the rave. I think this is about to change! If PC gaming is as good as this who needs a console?
