As a pc gamer I must say that shooter and console controls have never really worked for me. I mostly find it frustrating not nailing shots that I know would have been easy if using a mouse. Gears of war has, to my liking, switched focus from flawless aim to a more tactical approach where you must utilize covers to get a tactical advantage. Once in a superior position you unload your gun at your enemies and then dodge back into cover. This works amazingly well and caters well to the controls. The campaign is story driven and pretty cool, it does not have so many twists as you have come to expect but rater an emotional and sadness over it. I think this feels fresh and is somewhat new for a mainstream action title. There are actually moments that can bring a tear to your eyes. You often fight in a team of two or more with the occasional, select road, split of the team. The ai worked well and was not in the way, though it of course was cooler to play with a friend. All in all Gears of War II is a solid piece of entertainment that will have you more or less glued to the XBox until you have finished it. It's a marvel of engineering and the action is tight and will keep you on the edge. Though the game is not particularly hard, you probably need to use the checkpoints in some of the fights and sometimes death comes somewhat randomly and fast and you can not do much about it. My main concern from the game is that now that I have finished it I have no desire what so ever to replay it... I guess this is the drawback in story driven action titles, once you have experienced the story... well... |

I've recently finished Gears of War II on normal mode and this is a review of the single player campaign, though I did play the first few chapters in co-op. I have no real experience playing shooters on the XBox and I have just briefly tried the first installment of Gears.

about no desire to replay it
well...of course it is...since it is a work for showing UE3's capability and to make UE better sold i guess.

Yes the GoW series is much a flagship title for Epic especially GoW I, however, I do think that it's a good game as such I do have some theories regarding this in an upcoming blog post.
One thing that you can notice is that having games like this works out perfectly for the industry. They don't want you to play the same game over and over, they want you to go buy the next title!
I guess that's why so much focus is on using games as a medium for a story. I think this is wrong, a game is a language not a medium!
