Twitter Love

As some may know I've grown into quite an avid user of micro blog Twitter as of late. I really had no idea how big it was and how it would hook me in.

I'm meeting new people there every day and many of them have very positive things to say about Spell of Play, the game and about hUb. All in all a social open minded crowd that I'm happy to be part of.

You might also have noticed some increased activity on the forums etc ant that is mostly thanks to Twitter. Currently you find me hObbE as @SpellOfPlay and dntoll as @dntoll. Feel free to follow us!

Interestingly enough Twitter also has an awesome, open API to write your own Twitter Apps in. Diving into it it took me about 15 minutes to get started and an additional 15 minutes and some 80 lines of php code to get something working.

I have now added Twitter to the user profiles here at Spell of Play and the idea is that if you want to, we will Tweet your activity on this site and on hUb to your Twitter time line! An upcoming release of hUb will enable tweets of the games you start. This is pretty much in early beta format right now but I'm actually quite exited about this and I'm looking forward to trying it out more.

Feel free to post any comments and/or ideas, or just tweet me Smiling

Been active on Twitter for

Been active on Twitter for just over a month now, and yes I have managed to gather quite a gang of followers. I guess I'm a likable person Smiling

I hope to get the version of hUb out this week with some other minor fixes. Would be cool if you tried it.

What I'm a bit concerned about is the fact that you have to register your twitter user name and password here at spell of play (simply so we can post the tweets). This is a bit of a bummer, but I will check around and see if there is some other cool way of doing this. It would indeed have been nicer if you could "opt in" on your Twitter settings page, granting a site access to your account.

However, as it seems most twitter apps use this approach that you give them your user name and password, so possibly twitterers are used to this approach...

Twitter uses OAuth

Just found out that twitter use the neat OAuth authentication method. OAuth is an authenication method that enables access of information and functionality without having to give up your user name and password.

I have already started to look into the implementation of this and it's definitely more cumbersome than the basic authentication method described above. On the other it's more user friendly and safe.

The idea is that you simply get a link button on your profile page to enable twitter access. When clicking that link twitter will in turn ask you to log in to your account and grant Spell of Play access to your account. Cool

Twitter Progress

The implementation is coming along nicely and I hope to roll out the beta tomorrow! You will then be able to connect to your twitter account and send a simple test tweet.
