Bloom Feedback

Hi nice to another game on the hUb!

I really enjoyed testing it yesterday, and it ran smoothly on my WinXPHome machine, but here at work it does not start up, it changes resolution but does go any further... just a black screen...

Works fine for me on both

Works fine for me on both XP-professional and my Vista laptop.

I will get back with some more elaborate feedback soon Smiling

Vista fix released

A small fix has been released to fix the above problem which occured on some Vista machines. As usual, you will automatically get this fix via hUb.

Thank you Daniel for debugging this one for me Smiling

Another Vista fix released

After messing around a little bit more, a new release has been fixed that hopefully clears up any timing issues.

If you experience slowdowns or any other timing-related issues, please let me know. We suspect that Vista systems that run on multiple processors may show these issues.

There is another game named "Bloom", not remotely the same type of game though...

Wow, cute game :'D

Once I pressed the ecape button to pause the game, just to realize that I came to the main menu without any option to continue from where I was. Made me a bit sad :/

That escape is truly sad, I did it twice without thinking Sad Was actually a big downer and I turned the game off the first time...

I think it should be changed to a "continue, quit current game" menu.

The new version works

The new version works without any problems on my Quad core Vista...

I would really want some save/continue feature, I usually find around 70-80 flowers and have to quit...

It is really addicting Laughing out loud

users avatar

Thanks for the feed

The escape thing; jeez, sorry about that, in hindsight that is obvious. I will fix it asap.

I think the save/continue thing would be relatively easy to implement as well, I'll look into it.

Thanks for playing!

Argh, got hit by the escape-erases-your-progress feature too Smiling

But that's alright, the game's got potential! Like the low key music and exploring. And the walljumping. I like the idea of just being totally free to explore, but I think the traditional gamer inside me wants more sub-goals and rewards.

I saw a bug that I was going to take a screenshot of, but then I went out into the main menu... Smiling The player animation can mess up a bit when (slowly) transitioning between screens. When I was standing right on the screen edge some of the character was being clipped.

Anyway, nice work!

Thanks for the kind words

Thanks for the kind words Smiling

More free-to-explore-walljumping-goodness is in the works, with subgoals even Smiling

I'm out of town on biz today, but will get to work on the escape thing, and the animation thing (which I have seen but had forgotten) ASAP!

Escape menu in place

I just committed a new version with a more accident-proof escape menu. The player animation problem is also fixed.

Bloom Ep. 1 Completed! Yay!

Bloom Ep. 1 Completed! Yay! Got 160/190 flowers, not that bad imho.

Cool to get to watch replays!

Was quite fun, albeit a bit frustrating at times (I guess I have that coming since TWTPB Sticking out tongue)

And I found the statue of Norn! orz orz orz

users avatar

Great work! :)

Thanks for making the effort to play all the way thru, and great that you like the replays; they were a real learning experience to implement.

I'm thinking that a game like Astro-Creeps would also benefit from having replay-enabled hi-scores, so you get to see how the likes of Marcurt got to be so 1337... Sticking out tongue

great with the ESC menu!

I have also found the great Norn statue! Sticking out tongue

users avatar

I also completed Bloom EP1

This was fun!

I really enjoyed the game, looking forward to playing the next episode as well as speed running the game...

users avatar

Happy!

Thank you all for playing and thinking and telling. Glad you enjoy it. Next episode is in progress... A more frosty place...

Bloom Feed

Here's some Bloom feed, focused on graphics.

But first a question. I finished the game on one computer and then started it on another, but then I could not look at any replays? I guess the "game completed status" is stored locally? Would be neat to have that online instead... especially since I log in using hUb...

The backgrounds feel somewhat out of place (and a bit psychedelic) compared to the tiles. Maybe a more coherent look would work better?

The dog/fox/baboon/walker enemy design should be improved, compared to the jumper enemy, that really stands out, it feels bland and boring. Go for a more wacked out design!

The animations sometimes feel a bit on the stiff side, maybe 2 frames are not enough?

An idle animation on the hero/heroine would be cool.

The switches are hard to spot and should stand out more.

Over all I think you could work on the atmosphere of the game some more. Make the graphics and music more inline with each other. Some of the graphics and sound effects feel a bit too cheery compared to the music.

users avatar

Yes, completion is local

You're right, people that are logged in should be able to have their completion status work on any computer.

I concur with hObbE

A more coherent graphical style would indeed improve this game. Right now it feels like a bit of a mishmash of different art styles.

Also, I'm not sure if I like the autojumping when I hold down the jump button. Although it is sort of a double edged sword..

I'll try to play through the game some time in the near future, right now I only gave it a quick whirl to see what it was. It's a nice start and I think it will be a very nice game when you have finished it. =)
