Iteration 23

I'm still churning out iterations, but since I've struggled with a cold the last few days this one did not get as much attention as I wanted. There are some improvements though, and I'd really like to know what you think about it.

Also the game pad support is very basic. I don't know if it works with XInput compatible devices (i.e. XBox360 controller), please let me know if you have a game pad that works or not.

There will be enhanced support and also input mapping in the future.

Enjoy!

feedback

here is some feedback on the latest release:

I like the new updated GUI!

I still cannot get past Gate 5 Sad
Hm I want to change the difficulty setting now Sticking out tongue

The high score input box is not so shiny! I would like a nicer GUI with maybe some nice statistics like your best score is 23200482 and you are on the 166 position.

I would like some feedback on the latest score like:
"GREAT WORK!!!! You have improved your record with 10000pts!!!"

Today I tried to find my best score and it is quite hard since there are so many scores on the high score.

I dont know, maybe the hardcore oldschool gamers will hate me for this statement, but I don´t really want to play the game from the beginning when I´m out of jumps.

I was actually more eager to restart the game lacked the jumpgate feature...

Thank you for the

Thank you for the pointers.

I agree that the score input needs some shine. I'm not sure the Imperial Administration will exclaim in a "GREAT WORK!!!" though Smiling

The score features you mention would require you to be logged in via hUb to work. I guess they would be nice to have.

Maybe there should be a statistics/achievements page in the main menu, where you get your stats? Could be cool, and I do have planned some achievements stuff for the game.

Also I'm thinking of simplifying the jump gate stuff and remove the "jumps" and just have you restart on whatever level you have unlocked. If you play for score you start from level 1 anyway I guess. There will be a cap for non registered users.

I also have some ideas on score multiplier. My idea is to add a multiplier for every full wave you destroy and to reset the multiplier when an enemy gets away from you. This could make the scoring more interesting and it would give skilled players more points.

What do you guys think about that?

Gamepad

I tried the gamepad real quick.

I assume you haven't tested with an xbox360 controller (which is what I have), as the control scheme is pretty nasty. The fire button is the shoulder butten on the left, which feels really unnatural because you also control the ship with the left control stick (which is good).

Maybe you need a config screen for this in options, assuming you are using DInput and now XInput and don't know the specifics of the gamepad which is connected. Otherwise perhaps you could detect the 360 controller and have a good button scheme for it.

A multiplier sounds like a great idea, definitely worth checking out. Would add to the replay value, since there'd be a really good reason to try to kill every enemy.

Cool that the xbox

Cool that the xbox controller works Smiling I'm using vanilla DInput to handle the controller so I actually thought that XInput controllers would fell through.

Yes the control scheme must be a config option, I actually hardcoded fire to be left shoulder and energy to be right shoulder. The abilities are switched with the top four buttons. I think that that schema works well for me, but these things are individual.

I'm prioritizing score mult and config of gamepad for the next iteration.

Nice GUI, and the rest

Nice GUI, and the rest sounds good too. But when I finish the last level I get to level one again instead of the credz screen etc. At least it was like that yesterday... Or is it maybe that I NOP:ed some instructions like losing lives/HP/energy in the game? Anyway, try it out. It worked on the last iteration for me, and it doesn't now.
