Phew... barely managed to get something done the last 14 days. I guess regular life is creeping up on me. There are some nice items in the last release though. Like not gobbling up a lot of ram and some polish. I hope to make the next iteration the final one, at least in a while. There are some items I'd really like to fix, like:
If you have any suggestions or comments, this is definitely the time. I could probably also use some final hour motivational pep talk Enjoy! |

I don't have any
I don't have any suggestions, but really good work! Lots have changed since I first played the game almost half a year ago :]

Thanx! Yeah it's quite fun
Thanx! Yeah it's quite fun to look at the progress that's been made. I hope to have some "time-lapse" screen shots in the post mortem
Rawer!
I haven't tested this iteration, and you probably already know all my suggestions. But I'm going to keep nagging. ;P
1. Shooting sound needs to be a bit beefier.
2. Mother ship refueling/rearming during briefings.
3. Voice acting during briefings.
(4.) I haven't examined this recently, but I remember the game eating up 100% of mu only CPU when playing. I don't think it needs to as it shouldn't that much work to get it nice and smooth. I know game devs tend to want to hog all possible resources to up the frame rate.. but somewhere along the line it's just a waste. PS. If you fixed this already you can slap me in the face and ignore point 4. DS.
I'm glad to have been a part of the development of this game, even though it was only though feedback. I never got past the beginning of level 5 so I can't say much about the rest. But I do enjoy the challenge and the game got a lot more enjoyable (for me) since you added the score multiplier. I know I asked for the health bar to survive more than one shot, but in the end that ruined a lot of the thrill for me. The phrase "Be careful what you wish for." comes to mind.
I'm impressed that you followed through on this game and I really hope you reach the point where you can say it's finished. I know how it feels to finish something that's taken a long while to complete and it's a very nice feeling indeed, don't fret, the end of the tunnel is near!

Amazing that you have such a
Amazing that you have such a high score playing the first 4 levels, I guess you played them more or less flawlessly to get that score!
Level 5 is indeed a bitch! I'll make a video on how to get passed it when I get the time. It's probably impossible to get a very high bonus on it though. Level 6 is then said to be even harder... but 7, 8, 9 are definitely easier
I hop to get around to fixing at least the sound part you have been requesting for a while
Thanks for the encouragement!
He he, I'll look forward to
He he, I'll look forward to that video. I'm planning on buying T.W.T.P.B. soon, I have a very long list of games I want to buy and I'm not sure I can wait with all of them until I buy a new computer. But it's not much fun playing on my old one either as it is buggy as heck.
I just looked at my CPU-usage and while playing there was no issue. But when I gave another window focus T.W.T.P.B. went up to using 100% of my CPU. Also the game went into menu mode, but I couldn't see that until I gave it focus again. This is the same even if I already am in the menu mode before giving another window focus.
I also tried switching window focus during the briefings and that gave me some odd behavior. In other words the briefing behaved like I clicked in it.
I also noticed a lot of lagg when displaying the game in windowed mode over 2 desktops/screens. And I was unable to maximize it one my secondary screen (my TV). Also, some resolutions are locked in window mode, which feels odd. Usually people don't want the resolution to change when going from windowed mode to fullscreen or vice versa. I haven't experimented with this before, but it might be something to look into. Right now both my screens are treated as separate desktops, in other words I haven't cloned my image, that probably works. I'm running with NVIDIAS dualview setup, not sure how the others work, but my guess is that clone works. Horizontal/vertical spans might not work so well..
And another thing I forgot to mention last time. The planets closest (the largest planets) to the player are a bit too low resolution for their size. Either increase the texture resolution or cap their size.
Well, I'm off to play some more eq2, hope my computer doesn't crash as much as normally today...
Congrats on the new critter (read: baby) you have on the way!

Making the planets and space
Making the planets and space dust procedural instead of texture based would probably be the neatest solution. It would also be über geeky
Haven't you been longing for that new computer a while now! Time to get it man (and then buy T.W.T.P.B.
)!
I'll look into that cpu thingy, if I get the time. The game is supposed to go to the pause menu if you give another window focus, so it is pretty much desired behavior what you describe. It's not a bug, it's a feature
Also, the game will only go full screen on your primary display. Don't know how much work it would be to have it on any display, but I'll add it on my to-do list.
I have just released an update today. It features some polish and you should now be able to use the keyboard settings on WinXP to. I think you reported this bug a while back Malice? I finally got my old XP machine up and running again and could track this one down
I'll probably continue to make smaller releases this way, during this final push.
Thanks for the feed!
I wouldn't say level 5 is
I wouldn't say level 5 is very hard, as long as you know where the enemies will appear and don't care about killing all of them.
Also, I haven't had time to play this iteration yet. I just got home from working at Dreamhack yesterday, so I have quite a lot of catching up to do. It was awesome though, so I'm not complaining

Does anyone read these? :P
Oooh, procedural textures sounds like lots of fun. I definitely think you should go for that! (Extra nerdy points!)
Yeah, but since my apartment looks just the same as when I moved in a year ago I decided that I'm not allowed to buy toys until I get my apartment in order.. and seeing as my landlord is horrible I'm actually looking for a new one atm. (Long story..)
I gathered that the pause menu was the feature. But you don't actually see the game going into pause, it just kinda freezes until you give it back focus. Also, the briefings should clicky past when you give the window focus IMO, but that's not really that big a deal.
Aye, the WinXP bug was my report, I'll give it a whirl later in the week, got some packing to do tonight then it's an early visit to lala-land.
freelancer: But not killing enemies is like riding a unicycle without a banana!
PS. I also need to go to dreamhack some time... maybe next winter.. DS.

DreamHack is sweet, even for an old geezer like me
For obvious reasons I could not attend this time around, but I hope to go next year. We've been pondering of making a Spell of Play appearance for some time now (a few years
)
Also... you might have noticed that the high scores are messed up. Johno apparently did some badness to the database
. Don't worry though... the scores for T.W.T.P.B. are still there and we'll fix it asap.
And yes, I do rigorously read all forum post
Doh, I meant does anyone read the subject line?
A Spell of Play appearance would be cool. I hope you can make it next year!
I once tried to get the people at SOE to sponsor me and some friends with a booth and some posters and we could promote their MMORPG that we are hooked on. Just for fun, sadly that never happened.
Hm, haven't logged in today, I'll just pretend I didn't hear that about the highscores and expect them to be working fine when I'm back on Thursday.

I hope we can get our act together and actually make a reality of it too
Anyway, I fixed the T.W.T.P.B. higscores, so everything should be back to normal.

I managed to ship a new update of T.W.T.P.B. today. Things are getting more and more complete, and my to-do list is actually shrinking... at leas the stuff I intend to do.
Now it's more or less only some menu stuff left to fix.
This update is mostly courtesy of malice, fixing the much awaited player shooting sound, and not hogging the cpu when out of focus. You also get a splash screen and some other stuff.
Enjoy!
W00t!
Hipp hipp hurrah!

Yet another twtpb update was
Yet another twtpb update was just released. This is the final release candidate so I hope everything works
There are some minor items and such that will be fixed before the final release though. Thinking of adding another nag when you quit the game for example.
I also have to make a some new screenshots and gameplay vid... so much to do... so little time...
