From time to time i get an idea or so i start to write it down and then go back to ideas a month or so later to see if the idea is as good as it was. But this one i wanted to share here too since i like it here =) and maybe even an idea to release it here on SoP if possible. But like always working hard on a small indi game company already much and to much of my time goes that way. Anyway here i go. The idea Came from watching King of Kong - "A fistfull of quarters" and documentary on the worlds best Nintendo Donkey Kong gamers. Also Johno's idea about allowing the community challenge the community by developing and uploading new maps. GameName: Continuous Controls: Up Down Left Right Jump Maybes Duck/shoot/power-up The general thing is the game should be hard. but beatable. Each obstacle generate some high-score and each maps cleared also generate some high-score and the next map will load. In a hopefully endless loop/line of games. Also since one is working with the community on this there should maybe be 2 campaigns 1 user created and 2 developer created. The problems i can forsee is the major work needed to make the tools widly useable and also making it possble to make quite diverse maps. Also ensuring the quality if usercreated maps in the continues gameplay and our view on removing adding broken maps with 1 general highscore list on the game. I am aming to get that feeling of frustration you get when you have finnised 15 levels have 1 jump left 1 life left and you miss and you just gonna do it over again better so you maybe have 2 lifes or 3 lifes at the same spot next time. And just have to continue to play just to beat that stupid jump you know you can finnish! =) Anyway this is what i got now. Any feedback is welcome. |

First of all; cool that you
First of all; cool that you want to share your ideas! I think maybe the first step of an idea becoming real is to write it down (in text or code). Many ideas feel/seem so grand in the head but when you actually get them down... they often fall apart.
Basically I like your idea of a hard, competitive game with user generated content. However, this is possibly easier said than done
As you say there are big problems in making both the game mechanics simple and intuitive enough to allow for users to create good levels with simple tools.
I think a first step is to actually implement a basic level, try it out and see how it is received.
I think it would be interesting to have one single flow of levels (i.e. no difference between user and developer made levels). The problem here is of course how to figure out a good level ordering, so that you have a steady increase of difficulty. Maybe given simple enough game mechanics this could be figured out automatically. Otherwise some sort of sandbox could be arranged where a level is placed, ranked and then put in the main campaign.
maby one should just let the
maby one should just let the players have some rating on the levels. two types of rating one for quality and for for difficult and have the game mechanic auto organise the maps according to diffeculty =)
anyway ill put this idea in my idea bank for now and let it mature for abit. Still have my tower defence game to take care of =)
massive stats!
Yes, you would either have to let the players rank the levels and / or collect lots of stats.
We use HTTP in many aspects of our games to talk to PHP backends and store data in SQL databases; you could use something similar.
