Computer Shopping

Hey everyone,

Well, it's finally happened, I'm going to buy a new computer (and incidentally a whole new set of furniture). I was thinking I'd get some feedback of the setup I'm thinking of buying.

A few things about my goals with this computer, I want more than 2 cores, I want it quiet, I want it smaller than a standard miditower. Size is probably the least important aspect, but I want to give it a try. Silence is more important to me, and more than 2 cores is because I want to play around with parallel computations and I just don't think 2 cores will be enough for any interesting results.

You can find the components here: http://www.komplett.se/k/shoplist.aspx?mode=receive&si=674828&su=2B94842...

I know that the PSU is over dimensioned, but it's the smallest modular corsair one they have, I would much have preferred the 450W one but I can't find it at komplett (seems dustin sells them though but there are none in stock). I'll be buying a silent CPU cooler later once I know how much room I have for it in the chassi. My main concern is the processor, it's fairly good, but I'm pondering it might be better to buy a triple core phenom II (the 720), what do you guys think? Any comments or suggestions?

It will mainly function as a gaming rigg, but I'm guessing you knew this. =)

Sounds like a monster rig :)

Personally I have no clue about this stuff, I just use Dell machines; right now an XPS M1710 from 2006.

I know that Dell stuff is more expensive, but it's served me very well as my only machine (I didn't want a simpler laptop and then also a stationary machine), and the CompleteCare package recently saved my ass; the thing started overheating and powering down all the time at the end of 2008, so I called support and they replaced my motherboard, gpu (with a better one) and the heatsink on-site very quickly.

About a week later the replacement gpu got fried (there are rumours that Dell replaces stuff with not-new parts), but once again a tech came running to replace it again.

I'm sure that one could get away with as good or better performance for less money, but I'm happy with my laptop and very glad that I don't have to mess around with hardware that much (and seeing the Dell tech in action on my laptop was very scary...)

Well, I'm actually quite

Well, I'm actually quite uninterested in computer hardware Sticking out tongue I'm longing for the day when you just go get your self a bunch of awesome powered computing crystals!

But I do think it's about time you get yourself a new rig Sticking out tongue Also I think your doing right going for something as silent as possible, especially if you're going to have in your living space.

Keep us posted on what you finally get and how it works out!

So I ordered today

Decided to get myself a laptop, somehow I want to wait a while longer for my stationary rig (DX11 and other goodies are afoot). That and I got interested in water cooling but want to research it more before I get into that.

I ended up ordering a machine from HP that I think will serve me well. It was fairly cheap as laptops go, and the hardware beats my old stationary machines by leaps and bounds. I'm especially happy to find a laptop with a decent graphics card for that price. I'll tell you more about it next week, it should arrive on Monday. =)

Oh, a friend of mine in Kalmar bought a laptop from ASUS recently and warned me to stay away from them. Apparently it was broken right from the start (backlight wasn't working on the screen) and the support people at ASUS don't seem to want to help. Just in case anyone was eying their machines.

my GPU melted (again...)

So my GPU "melted" for the third time yesterday...

Same problems as before, a gfx freeze for about 1 minute followed by a BSOD that told me that my display driver got caught in an endless loop. I wonder what it was doing to the GPU during that time...

Reboot revealed damage to the video memory; there was garbage on the screen in almost all low-res and text video modes. Diagnostics revealed read/write errors in all video modes, and the error codes were the same as earlier this year.

The last time this happened I did some googling that revealed that this kind of thing seems to happen alot with the XPS M1710.

On top of that, I found that my 3yr warranty had expired one week ago. It seems that there is a 2 week grace period in which they are nice to you and replace faulty parts, though not on site anymore, but hopefully I will get a little more mileage out of my old XPS M1710 which has served me well for 3 solid years.

I can't seem to boot in normal mode, so I'm writing this now from Safe Mode (with networking). So I figured it was time to bite the bullet (of course it's going to happen again even if I get the parts replaced), and by going via the same salesperson I used 3 years ago I got a pretty good deal. I ordered a variant of the Precision M6400 Covet machine (nice and orange):

Once again I'm going for full pro support and accident coverage for 3yrs; since this will be my main system and used when I travel in my work I find that the peace of mind is well worth the cash.

Wow! That's some monster

Wow! That's some monster system you are getting, I can understand getting full support and accident coverage on that. My laptop is so cheap I could probably buy a new one in a few years that's equally good for whatever any additional coverage would cost me. I like the orange finish on the machine you are getting, it's different and quite pleasant.

Time-bomb?

wow. it's like a time-bomb. my brother have the EXACT same problems now. 1 month after the 3-year warranty was up. He didn't get any deals. funny how they all break down just after warranty isn't an option anymore.

I wouldn't be surprised.

I wouldn't be surprised. It's a little bit too much of a coincidence.

EDIT: Great video. I'm not really surprised by anything in that movie but it's great it's going around. There's probably more than enough people that would be shocked by its content.
