There has been some talk about evolving the hUb platform to support new technologies in another thread, but I think it needs one of its own. Personally, I want hUb to get XNA support, mainly for my own sake so I can release my current project, but also because I think it's a good platform for rapid development that others should have access to if they wish. The first idea that comes to mind for me, is that each game would simply have some kind of file defining what dependancies it has, and the hUb would keep internal track of what ones are currently installed. When a game is installed or updated, hUb checks which dependancies it has, and installs any that are not currently there. I think detecting exactly what ones are installed by OS calls will never work fully, and would be overkill, so just keeping track of what installers have been finished is enough. For the situation if someone uninstalls something hUb has installed, there could be a little menu or something where one could say "Install this dependancy" chosen from a list of all dependancies currently supported. Ecah game could also have a small info text thing saying what dependancies it has. Well, these are my thoughts. For the record, the XNA stuff that is needed is the .net 2.0 redist and the XNA 3.1 redist. Both are small and quick to install. |

I'd like to try XNA
I'd like to try XNA development too in the future so it would be nice if it's already supported. Even nicer if there's some extra code examples around
The benefit of hobbes detection is that it's automatic and fixes the problem whereas a file needs to be updated by the developer and is a source for human error. I dunno, maybe there can be both.
