Iteration 8 was just released: http://www.spellofplay.com/node/273 I feel that the ship particles is a bit uninspired and standard. More love is coming that way but now we at least got some placeholders I'm very curios on what you think about the new energy bars and how the gameplay changes has affected your playing strategies. /hObbE |

I love almost everything you did with this version. You actually have better overview of energy and health now. probably since you're mostly looking at where you're shooting than where you are. they must be this big and obvious. and they're not in the way yet.
The engine effect is spot on in my opinion. The nozzle flashes could do with some work. Bigger, brighter, disappear slightly faster.
With the new benefit of energy at the end of the level (and death) the simple monsters in the beginning of levels have no use anymore. maybe give back half the health and regenerate slightly faster, that way you can fix full health your health yourself but still come out with full energy after the first few enemies with some work.
I agree that loosing one weapon upgrade on death could be okay, but I was completely stripped, which totally destroyed the experience for me. Lives are pretty much unnecessary if you're left on level three with a one-shot cannon... EDIT: It seems you lose 3 levels which is too much. One is enough. Maybe 2 but then it would be nice to get an upgrade from the boss as well as the one on mid-level.
oh and we want BIG BOOOOM when the bosses die.
EDIT: just had a brilliant idea. how about not wrapping when scrolling through abilities? then you could always reach all abilities faster. you'd only need to be more precise when looking for the middle ability but that would also be easier since you'd learn which way to change one step to reach it after a short while. It's always nice to have a reference point. When you wrap you're lost in the heat of the battle.
another slight decrease in energy consumption for rapid fire would be awesome. not much, just a little and its perfect.

Thanx for the feed. Some really good things there!

hmmm the decrease should be one lower than the weapon you started the leve with. In the previous version you went back to the weapon you started the level with.
Scenario:
You start a level wit the level 2 gun, pick up the level 3 gun, and then you die still on that level. You are then reset to level 1 guns (one lower than the gun you started with).
So in this version you are actually punished when dying, before you where "only" reset.
My motivation for this was to really emphasise skill, but maybe I went over the top
What do others think?

Great feed SoildBenny!
Idea on the weapon looses: you just lose one weapon of what you had when you died. on your scenario hObbE then the player would restart with lvl2 gun. But if he died before he got the lvl3 gun he would restart with lvl1. This makes more sens to me.
Another way to go would be to reset the player completly after he dies but have more weapon drops on each level. This is probably not such a good idea thou.
Soon I will start with the gfx for real on t.w.t.p.b

Nice! The big bars are definitely an improvement. Now I can really focus on the gameplay
I still think Regeneration drains too much energy though. On the other hand, maybe I should stop getting shot
One thing I don't agree with is that you now lose a weapon when you die. I definitely preferred the reset. Oh, and I agree with SolidBenny; we want BIG BOOMS
Not wrapping the abilities list also seems like a good idea. I've had to take my eyes off of the enemies quite a few times to check which ability I have active.

Thanx!
I'm off for a one week vacation now, so this is my last post for some time.
Just so you know I'm not ignoring you guys!
It will be very interesting to read what you come up with for me to deal with in this week

yeah regen costs too much. decrease energy consumption until we say its too easy
ideally I'd prefer not having to start the level over at all but if you want to keep it that way it would make most sense to lose one upgrade from when you died. this would at least make you wanna reach midpoint really bad when you die. it rewards you for coming a long way before dying.
thinking back I think not losing anything more than what you found on the level was more fun. you still lost a life and what you had acquired and that sucked enough. the game is tough enough, even if you know where all enemies come!

Yeah, losing an upgrade when you die in a level is too much.
And if just the health regenerated then it would be perfect. The energy should still need collecting.

Agree!

Were the scores reset? Just wanted to know because I recently switched to Vista, and now I don't see any scores at all.

Curiously enough I didn't get a "This program is blocked" popup. I added TWTPB.exe manually in the exception list, but I'm still not seeing any scores. Also, about every second time I launch the game now it complains about not finding any compatible dx9 hardware.
Btw, I guess this means my 1500000 score didn't get submitted

Do you have any problems viewing high scores from our other games? test Pirate Quest and link-it (different code) and see if they work
I think the dx9 problem might be a vista issue, I have heard of similar problems when playing TF2

Back!
And I'll get onto working on t.w.t.p.b. asap
Freelancer: Strange stuff... However it seems your score has been submitted since you're on top of the highscore with a huge score
