Iteration 15
|
Yay! We have finally managed to push out iteration 15, that is the lost iteration 14 and a bunch of other improvements (ability icons!). As usual I'm very curious of what you think! /hObbE |

DreamHack
Just came home from my superfast session at DH summer 08. Played and watched some people play T.W.T.P.B. good learning experience...
Noticed that there is a need for some indication of how much life the bosses has left. That is some kind of health bar for the boss...
do you agree?

Even if I didn't manage to
Even if I didn't manage to kill the new level 4 boss (in my defence I only tried twice), I did see someone (although I can't remember who) play the fifth boss. Took quite a while to kill. So yeah, a health bar is definitely needed, at least for that one.
Could someone remove
Could someone remove miniyou's score? I'm assuming it's not really possible to get 20333350, and it makes me look bad
Sure
Seems as we have attracted some attention at DreamHack
. I'll be removing them asap.

The massive scores in T.W.T.P.B. was caused by someone hacked T.W.T.P.B. old skool style! That is a memory scanner was used and the code was then manipulated, I think this is really cool
I don't know if I have the time to add some "protection" against this. First of all it will complicate the code and secondly it will be impossible to protect against a really good and dedicated hacker.
Really cool stuff!

Got a problem
I heard of this game and hub at Dreamhack, and downloaded and installed immediatly, and I really like this game and I'm seriously considering buying the full version, however, I encountered a bit of a problem when I tried to install it on another of my computers at home.
Every time i try to start the game I get an error that states that I need DirectX 9 and shadermodel 2.0. The problem is that I already have this since long back. I have checked drivers for my graphics card and everything id fully updated.
Can someone help me? I really do like the game and hub and indie software development.
By the way, I'm know miniyou and happen to be the one who tipped him about this game, and I would be sorry, but i guess it solved itself, and well, he does it for his already to large ego, not to be unkind to anyone;)

Finally got to the fifth
Finally got to the fifth boss (didn't beat it though). It was awesome! And it looks like I'll be staying on top of the highscore table
(Also, I'll be marking my scores with I##freelancer now. Some way to see what iteration a score was recorded with would be nice
Archons: Cool that you found
Archons: Cool that you found us via DH! I guess the best way would be for you to mail me (tobias[at]spellofplay[dot]com) your detailed computer specs (OS, Graphics Card). There is also a log file in hub/games/twtpb/twtpb.log that you can send me.
You could also try some other games and see if they work. AWorld for example also uses shaders...
As you probably understand it is very hard for us to test on many configurations so your information would be appreciated.
And oh about miniyou, no problems, I think it's quite cool that he put in the effort
I also mailed him some and he explained how he did it. So all is cool
Freelancer: Ah great that you find the game a challenge again
.
And there are actually separate highcores for the twtpb iterations in the Spell of Play Community group. It is open for all so jus join it (you are already a member freelancer).
Good to know. There seems to
Good to know. There seems to be one table too many for I12 though
Ah well, it was fun while it
Ah well, it was fun while it lasted. Guess I'll have to wait for the next level now
I did notice however that the fifth boss is one big source of energy (and points). Did you put a fusion reactor in there?
There are indeed a lot of
There are indeed a lot of points to earn on the level 5 boss. If you have the stamina you could get a very high score by just playing the boss. I guess eventually you would probably kill it. Maybe it's a problem and we should have a max time for the boss?
Anyways I'm working hard on the next level and it will be the hardest ever, it will require fast reactions, conserving energy and staying cool at all cost. The new boss is also quite a classic shmup boss
What do you think about the ability icons under the ship? I find myself not looking in that area at all... and I'm thinking about moving them to above the ship and make them a bit bigger. They are probably so transparent that they will not obstruct the view, and work more like a hud. What do you think about that?
How to get more to register
Another thing that is starting to become something to adress is the quite low amount of people that have registered the game. There are quite a few who like it and play it, but very few who register.
If you register this is what you currently get:
Access to the "True Believers" private T.W.T.P.B. group where you can match your skills to other registered players.
You get five lives instead of the normal 3 lives.
Anyone got any ideas on how to get more people to register for a full copy? What would make you register the game if you have not yet done so?
Heh, I didn't even notice
Heh, I didn't even notice those icons until the third or forth time I played. So yeah, moving them to above the ship is probably a good idea.
As for registering, I have no idea. It just seemed natural to me since I play the game a lot.
Yeah, I also noticed that I
Yeah, I also noticed that I seldome looked under the ship since there are very few enemys and bullets in that area (doh).
I have moved them to above the ship and also made them a lot bigger. We'll see how it works.
I have just made the final touches on the release, I will do some testing but it will be released as soon as possible tomorrow.
I managed to get to the level 6 boss using all 5 lives. Level is really really hard (imho). Will be interesting to see if you can beat it (not that I doubt you will do so)!
The registration stuff is a hard one. Time limit is a classic, but after the time many will simply just stop playing (I guess). I want as many people as possible to play the game, and stay playing. Some games have a "consecutive game max time" i.e. play as many times you like but only for like 5 minutes. I guess in this game this would effectively be to limit the game to the first two levels.
Ah well... I probably need to do some experimenting with this.
Of course I'll beat it, the
Of course I'll beat it, the question is how long it will take. I still don't really have a strategy for the fifth level (I kinda just try to stay away from the bullets
), which I do for the other levels (to kill every enemy, which means a higher score). So I still have fine-tuning to do.
Hopefully I'll have some time to try the new iteration tomorrow. I'm taking my CCNA exam on Wednesday though, so I'll probably spend most of my time studying
